Medical Abortion Information

What is a Medical Abortion?

A medical abortion is a safe and effective method of ending an early pregnancy using medication rather than a surgical procedure. The medicines work together to safely end the pregnancy by first stopping the pregnancy from continuing and then helping the uterus expel the pregnancy tissue. Medical abortion is recommended by the World Health Organization as a safe option for eligible pregnancies when accompanied by accurate information, appropriate support, and access to healthcare if needed.

Our Counselors Guide You On:

Every person receives individualized guidance based on their needs.

How Medical Abortion Works

Mifepristone — The first medicine blocks the hormone needed for the pregnancy to continue and begins separating the pregnancy from the wall of the uterus.

Misoprostol — The second medicine causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. Our counselors will guide you throughout every step of the process.

Before Using the Pills

If you have any questions before starting, contact your Senje counselor.

How to Use the Pills

The following guidance reflects Senje Hotline’s clinician-approved protocol, informed by current WHO recommendations.

Day 1

Take one Emitino tablet. Thirty minutes later, swallow one Mifepristone tablet with water. This medicine begins separating the pregnancy from the wall of the uterus. Some people experience light bleeding or spotting after taking Mifepristone. Wearing a sanitary pad is recommended. You may continue with your normal daily activities while waiting for the next step.

After 48 Hours

Take one Emitino tablet. Thirty minutes later, place four Misoprostol tablets under your tongue at the same time and allow them to dissolve as instructed by your counselor. This medicine causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. After the tablets have dissolved, take Brufen (Ibuprofen) for pain relief as advised by your counselor. Within approximately one hour, you can expect cramping and bleeding. Many people experience bleeding with clots over the next several hours as the pregnancy passes. Your counselor will explain what to expect and remain available if you need support.

What to Expect

Bleeding usually becomes lighter over the following days and may continue as spotting for up to several weeks. Everyone’s experience is different.

⚠️ Warning Signs

Seek urgent medical care immediately if you experience:

  • Very heavy bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain that does not improve with pain medication
  • Fever that persists after the first day
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Any symptoms that concern you

If you are unsure whether your symptoms are normal, contact Senje Hotline immediately.
